Privacy

The short version: you can play every daily puzzle without telling us who you are. There are no ads, no advertising cookies and no cross-site tracking on this site.

Your puzzle progress stays on your device

Your entries, solving time and streak for the daily puzzle are kept in your browser's local storage under keys beginning ig:daily:; for the weekly arrowword it is your entries and solving time — there is no weekly streak — under keys beginning ig:weekly:. They are never sent to us — which is also why clearing your browser data resets your streak, and why your progress does not follow you to another device.

Analytics

We use PostHog to count how the site is used, configured to store nothing on your device: no cookies, no persistent identifier, memory-only. Data is processed on PostHog's EU servers. Automatic capture is switched off, so nothing is recorded except page views and seven named events: a daily puzzle was started, a daily puzzle was solved, a daily result was shared, someone subscribed to the letter, a weekly arrowword was started, a weekly arrowword was solved, a weekly result was shared. None of them carries anything that identifies you.

The newsletter

Only if you type your address in yourself. It goes to Buttondown, our email provider, who stores it in order to send the letter. You will be asked to confirm by email before anything is sent, and every letter carries an unsubscribe link that deletes you from the list.

Hosting and fonts

The site is hosted by Vercel, whose servers keep the usual technical request logs, including IP addresses, for operating and securing the service. Our fonts are served from this site — your browser makes no request to Google Fonts or any other font host while reading this page.

Who else handles any of this, and where

Three companies process something on our behalf. Two of them are in the United States, which means your newsletter address and the technical request logs leave Switzerland and the EEA. Their own data-processing terms set out the safeguards they use for that.

• Vercel — hosting. This site's server functions run in Washington, D.C.
• Buttondown, LLC — the newsletter, and only the address you typed in. United States.
• PostHog — the four counters described above, on their European servers.

How long any of it is kept

Your newsletter address stays on the list until you leave it — the unsubscribe link in every letter deletes it, and you need not ask us. Your puzzle progress never reaches us at all, so there is nothing for us to keep or delete; clearing your browser data removes it. The analytics counters carry nothing that identifies a person, so there is no record about you to age out. Server logs are kept by our host for the period their own terms describe.

Why we are allowed to

The newsletter rests on your consent: you type your address, then confirm it by email, and you can withdraw that consent at any time by unsubscribing. The counting and the server logs rest on our legitimate interest in knowing whether anyone reads this and in keeping the site running and secure. What your browser stores while you solve is simply part of the thing you asked for.

Your rights

You may ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and object to its processing. Since the only thing we hold that could identify you is a newsletter address, that usually means unsubscribing — but write to contact@inkgazette.com either way and we will answer.

If what we collect changes, this page changes with it before the change takes effect.
